Manchester United In The Race For Di Maria: Why It’s Unlikely To Happen

New manager Louis van Gaal has identified midfield and the wide positions as the areas which need the most reinforcement this summer. Di Maria would transform United.

According to the Daily Star if Manchester United want the Real Madrid winger/midfielder, they will have to fight off interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and French duo Paris Saint Germain and AS Monaco.

Di Maria has been dropping hints in the last few weeks of the season, that even after the winning the Copa Del Rey and Champions League he could leave the Bernebeu.

The Argentine has been absolutely brilliant this season, after the arrival of Gareth Bale saw Ancelotti convert him from a winger into a high energy midfielder.

With a frontline of Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale who score 104 goals in the league, you need someone to set them up and that has been Di Maria, with 17 assists. (Squawka)

I think the reason that Di Maria is willing to leave is because he can see that in Ancelotti’s 4-3-3 system, when all players are fit he may not be in the starting line-up.

With Bale taking his spot in the front three, and a midfield three of Luka Modric, Xabi Alonso, German international Sami Khedira and Asier Illaramendi on the bench there’s not a lot of room.

I believe Di Maria still sees himself as a winger and wants to see what big European clubs are willing to give him a starting place in their squads.

Unfortunately, this summer I think the Champions League Final man of the match is out of Manchester United’s reach, as they have no European football next season.

But if van Gaal implements his famous 4-3-3 formation a player like Angel Di Maria would offer such flexibility and blistering pace that would strike fear in the opposition.
