Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Graeme Souness slammed Manchester United’s defence post their 3-2 loss at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Neville was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying that the United centre-backs melted in the game and also questioned why the club was vocal about signing defenders in the summer window.

“When Manchester United are so publicly in the transfer window looking for defenders, what belief does that give them?”

The United legend went on and questioned Jose Mourinho’s signings at the back.

“They know they’re on borrowed time and I have to say (Eric) Bailly and (Victor) Lindelof were poor. They are the ones Jose has signed.

“It has been poor recruitment. That back four aren’t good enough to win the title. The five centre backs they’ve got are second centre backs. They’re not authoritative or leaders.”

Souness was more scathing of Eric Bailly as the former Liverpool captain added that the Ivorian defender didn’t know where he was.

“He’s in trouble here today. He doesn’t know if he’s in New York or New Year. United have been weak, losing individual battles.”

United were abject in their display against the Seagulls even though the scoreline looked close. We were second best in every department on the pitch and the pundits are right in their criticism of the players.

A quality response is the need of the hour and our next clash against Tottenham will not be easy. Should we play in a similar fashion against Spurs, we could be in for a thrashing at the hands of Harry Kane and co.
