Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has found himself in the midst of memes and social media jokes for some time now, and he has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford. This not only compounded Erik ten Hag into benching him but also stripped him of his captaincy at the club.

The Red Devils signed Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a £80 million transfer in 2019. This is a mammoth fee, and he walked into the doors at Carrington already with massive pressure on those broad shoulders to prove his worth to the United faithful. In hindsight, his impressive performances at King Power seduced the Manchester Reds into paying huge fees for his acquisition, but it has not worked out as expected for all parties.

The 31-year-old has become a laughing stock at Old Trafford and has struggled to keep up to his optimum game with all the off-the-pitch distractions and criticism affecting his performance on the field. This has been a consistent trend since his move to Manchester United was made official.

Amid all the criticisms, he has kept on going and being a solidifying presence in the Red Devil’s defence for the past decade. Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has given a shoulder to the former Hull City player in The Overlap’s latest episode, with Ian acknowledging how all the off-the-pitch shenanigans have been pointless and overworked.

Wright said:

“I look at Harry Maguire, the memes, the gifts, and I watch how he plays; everybody makes mistakes. I’ve not seen Harry Maguire do anything; what makes me go? What is going on? How is this guy even playing? What’s happened is that people have taken the piss out of this guy so relentlessly that you’re genuinely waiting for him to do anything. And now, even if he misplaces something, he’s getting hammered. That’s the level. I was totally different level.”

The United faithful would be hoping Harry Maguire would be able to lead the backline with strength and precision going into the next season and anchor the club’s backline with his commanding presence on the pitch.
