Man United are in a race against time to offload Mason Greenwood
According to a Mirror report, Manchester United are prepared for the possibility of Mason Greenwood ending up remaining at the club when the players report back for the 2024/25 pre-season on July 8.
The former England international has not played for United since January 2022, when he was suspended by the club amidst allegations of assault from his former partner.
After the charges were dropped, United were reportedly ready to bring Greenwood back into the team, but the attempt ultimately proved unsuccessful as the reports of the same broke early and fan backlash ensued.
Greenwood subsequently spent the 2023/24 season on loan at La Liga club Getafe.
The 22-year-old, by virtue of his performances in Spain, which handed him Getafe’s Player of the Season award, has been attracting interest from big European clubs, with Serie A club Lazio having reportedly submitted a £30m bid, though United are holding out for £40 million. Getafe themselves remain interested, while Juventus were monitoring his situation up until recently but backed out.
Greenwood’s current United contract fetches him £50k a week. With him entering the last year of his contract, United are desperate for a sale so as to be able to report a direct profit on their books, Greenwood being an academy graduate.
Should a deal not materialise by the time pre-season begins next month, Greenwood would be eligible to report back to training at United.
To deal or not to deal
United are desperate to sell Greenwood, but they need to be realistic about the predicament they are in.
Should Greenwood return to training next month, which legally he would have every right to, United ought to subject him to the same treatment Jadon Sancho was handed by Erik ten Hag: ostracised from the first team until the situation is sorted out.

United cannot, must not allow to happen what they were willing to last summer. The new sporting owners have been rightfully getting a bit of stick of late because of their actions; they’d be wise to make a timely call here.
