Bayern Munich legend Mario Basler ridicules the idea of signing Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho
Bayern Munich legend Mario Basler shuns the idea of his club signing Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho. Basler insisted that Sancho’s troublesome attitude is a problem regardless of the talent and ability he possesses.
Sancho had a public fallout with United manager Erik ten Hag during the beginning of the season in early September. Ten Hag criticized Sancho’s poor training performances while reasoning his expulsion from the matchday squad against Arsenal. The Red Devils lost the Premier League game 3-1 at Etihad Stadium and have continued to struggle this season.
The 23-year-old retaliated to his manager’s criticism through a since-deleted post on platform X, defending his work ethic. The English international blamed the manager for using him as a scapegoat for the team’s poor performances.
United banished Sancho from the first-team facilities for his insubordination until the player apologised to the manager. Nevertheless, the Englishman refused to apologize and maintained his defence with accusations of double standard levied against Ten Hag.
United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund during the summer of 2021 after his very productive spell with the German club. The 23-year-old joined the Red Devils with huge expectations over his talents and ability to produce goals and assists.
However, the England international has struggled to repeat his Dortmund form at United, facing criticism from fans and pundits. Sancho’s training issues have taken the spotlight during his time at Dortmund and with the England national team’s training camp.
As quoted in The Mirror, Basler lambasted the poor attitude of Sancho during his time at United and Dortmund. He said:
“Bayern are very strict and, when they sign a player, his personality will have to fit in with the club. Sancho may be a good footballer but Bayern would not sign him because he’s not what they look for in a person. Sancho was already a troublemaker in Dortmund. His attitude is a problem and he has to change it.”
Ten Hag publicly disclosed private information about Sancho’s struggle with mental health last season. The 53-year-old did not have permission from the club and the player to disclose such private information.

The United boss has faced criticism for poor man-management decisions that he has taken since joining the Red Devils. Ten Hag fell out publicly with Cristiano Ronaldo, leading to the mutual termination of Ronaldo’s contract.

Basler’s comments are worrisome as they point out the poor reputation that Sancho has built due to this public saga. The reputation is problematic for both the player and the club as they seek a suitable club to negotiate with. As Sancho appears poised to depart from United, negotiations must address his already high wage package. The Red Devils have to make hard decisions because they need to sell players to recruit new ones.
