Manchester United legend Andy Cole gives an honest assessment of Marcus Rashford

Manchester United legend Andy Cole spoke about Marcus Rashford and his struggle with consistency this season. The 25-year-old has faced the familiar struggle with inconsistency throughout his career with the Red Devils.

United are currently facing a nightmare season with an injury crisis and poor form from several senior players. So far this season, the Red Devils have experienced six losses in the 11 matches they’ve played in all competitions.

The England international returns from his October international break duties with the national team. Rashford scored a fantastic goal against Italy in England’s 3-1 victory at the Wembley stadium.

Cole told Betfred (h/t Manchester Evening News) that Rashford falls short of the higher level of consistency required for comparisons with football greats. He said:

“If you don’t count last season for Marcus and you look at the two seasons prior to that, his form was the same as it is now and you can only ask Marcus what the problem is. When you look at Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, you’d never have a conversation about them having an off year. Marcus needs to discover how he can maintain that high level of consistency”

The 25-year-old is in the ninth season for the Red Devils’ senior team after earning a promotion from the United academy.  Rashford scored 30 goals and 11 assists for United last season and finished the season as their leading goal scorer.

The Red Devils rewarded the Englishman with a lucrative five-year contract during the summer. Fans and pundits expected Rashford to continue his rich vein of form and finally fulfil his massive potential.

However, the 25-year-old has faced similar problems with inconsistency this season that he showed in seasons before the last one. Rashford has scored only a goal and provided three assists from 10 matches in all competitions.

Critics have targeted the England international for his selfish style of play and minimal contribution to the team. Rashford has a knack for overdoing his trademark cutting inside and shooting which makes me predictable at times.

The 25-year-old can benefit from mixing up his style to become more unpredictable and provide more assists to his teammates. There are times when he opts to shoot when his teammates are in a better position to receive the ball and score.
