Peter Schmeichel questions why Manchester United transfer listed Scott McTominay last summer
Peter Schmeichel knows a thing or two about players who want to play for the Manchester United badge and has now cut to the chase by questioning why the Red Devils opted to transfer-list Scott McTominay in the 2023 summer transfer window.
Premier League sides West Ham United and Fulham but neither club were able to see the deal through. It was expected that the arrivals of Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount would limit the 26-year-old’s playing time but McTominay does not appear content to sit on the bench.
With the game against Brentford looking lost, Erik ten Hag threw on McTOminay in the 87th minute. Few would have predicted that the midfielder would turn the game around and send Old Trafford into hysteria.
McTominay was arguably at the right place at the right time for the winner, but history will care little and will remember him as the player who swung the tie in the Red Devils’ favour.
Speaking on Premier League Productions (h/t Manchester Evening News), Schmeichel has slammed manager Erik ten Hag for his willingness to sell McTominay in the summer.
“I don’t understand what coaches are doing. Scott McTominay was up for sale all summer and I don’t understand that.”
Schmeichel is right in his assessment that Ten Hag’s decision to transfer list the 26-year-old appears silly given recent developments. While only 11 players can take to the field at any point in time, the club need players on the bench to come on and make a telling difference when needed.
“You need players that can play different positions, that can come from the bench and change the course of the game and he’s definitely one of them. You bring in players and you sit there with big question marks, why is that player there?”
The Scot certainly has the ability and heart to don a United jersey. While the club can always do better, it made little sense to sell a player who is always ready to leave it all on the field for the Old Trafford outfit.
We do not just need quality players but also those who show heart and desire on the field. McTominay displays just that and it remains to be seen if his heroics will improve his chances of resurrecting his Old Trafford career.

With Casemiro losing that edge, the Red Devils need a hero hero in the middle of the park. Time will tell whether McTominay will be that man.
