Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho given England hope by manager Gareth Southgate amidst Old Trafford uncertainty
England Manager Gareth Southgate has told Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho that he still has a future with England.
Sancho faces an uncertain future at the club after a public back-and-forth with United manager Erik ten Hag. Saudi Arabia club Al-Ettifaq attempted to sign Sancho on loan but failed to meet the £50m obligation-to-buy that the Red Devils demanded.
The England manager took to a pre-match press conference (h/t Metro) ahead of England’s friendly against Scotland to address this issue. He said:
“I think that’s the challenge for him now. It’s been the best part of a couple of years since we worked with him, it’s difficult to say exactly the position that he finds himself and where he is with it all. But for every player that’s not with us, there is always an opportunity if they can seize the form and have the [right] level of performance.”
The 23-year-old last appeared for England in a match against Andorra in October 2021. His struggle for form at the club level kept him out of international duty since then.
Sancho has registered 12 goals and six assists in 82 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions. The productivity of the Englishman is significantly lower than it was at his previous club Borussia Dortmund. The English forward scored 50 goals and produced 64 assists in 137 games when he played for the German club.
Sancho’s public spat with the United manager came after Ten Hag revealed his exclusion from the squad for poor training performances in the 3-1 defeat at Emirates Stadium on 3rd September.
Sancho immediately retaliated on social media platform, X, claiming that he had been made a “scapegoat”. The public spat between the manager and the player divided the fanbase and pundits alike.
We hope the English manager’s words encourage Sancho to resolve his issues quickly. The English forward is still very young at 23 years of age and has time to resurrect the form he showed at Dortmund.
