Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes wants Jon Moss to ‘apologise’ for role in Tottenham Hotspur defeat
Bruno Fernandes has had a go at referees boss Jon Moss after Manchester United’s 2-0 Premier League loss against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.
Lisandro Martinez had a day to forget, deflecting Dejan Kulusevski’s cross into Pape Matar Sarr’s path for the first goal in the early stages of the second half. He then scored an own goal in the 83rd minute to wrap up the scoreline.
But things could have been very different had Manchester United been awarded the penalty in the 25th minute. Alejandro Garnacho’s shot hit Cristian Romero’s extended arm inside the box.
No penalty. Michael Oliver did not point to the spot and VAR did not overturn the decision either. In the first gameweek, Andre Onana came close to conceding a penalty kick in stoppage time.
Man United robbed against Spurs
Many believed the Red Devils were lucky to escape with a win and questioned VAR’s decision not to award what they believed was a clear penalty. PGMOL chief Howard Webb even contacted Wolves to apologise for the error.
Fernandes now wants a similar uproar in Manchester United’s case for a penalty against Spurs. He said after the game, via Stadium Astro (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“You will have to ask him [the referee why it was not given]. They have to start giving interviews after the games so they can explain themselves. It is a clear penalty, no excuses for not seeing, no excuses for VAR not seeing that.
“Last week they made a big thing on United not having a penalty against, I want to see what is going to happen this week, if there is going to be the same show they did last week. I want to see if Jon Moss also comes to apologise to our dressing room like they said they did to the manager of Wolves. I hope he is here and he can come.”
Man United were not good at all against Spurs, missing key chances and giving away possession at key intervals throughout the game. The second half was especially poor.

But in these games, you need help from the referees if you have a valid call for a game-changing penalty kick. In this case, we didn’t even need their help but for them to do their jobs properly. It was a spot-kick we earned and which should have given us a key advantage in a tough game against a top-four rival away from home.
Bruno’s comments are blunt and hopefully, they don’t get him a ban. But he wouldn’t regret making them because he said absolutely nothing wrong.
