Marcus Rashford willing to step in as Manchester United captain
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford would be ready to step in and become the captain at the Old Trafford side if the opportunity arose.
Erik ten Hag recently stripped Harry Maguire of the armband. The England international had been leading the team out on the pitch ever since Ashley Young’s departure in January 2020.
However, the former Leicester City star has found game time hard to come by since the Dutch manager’s arrival last summer. In the 2022/23 term, the 30-year-old started in just eight matches in the Premier League.
Therefore, it is understandable that the gaffer opted for a new captain ahead of the next season. Bruno Fernandes had the armband in the previous campaign when the defender was out of the team.
Now, the Portuguese has officially been handed the responsibility of leading the team out on the pitch. The 28-year-old has often been a vocal figure for the Red Devils on the pitch.
However, Rashford would evidently have been a decent shout to get the captain’s armband. The 25-year-old made his way through the youth ranks at the Old Trafford side. Speaking on The Overlap on YouTube (h/t Mirror), the forward would not hesitate to shoulder the responsibility of being captain.
“Yeah. I don’t actively think about it but I feel like if the opportunity came, I would step into it.”
Last season the England international was United’s talisman. He was our leading goalscorer, finding the back of the net 30 times in 56 appearances in all competitions.
Ten Hag had other essential player’s in the previous campaign as well. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were important figures in the backline for us. Casemiro was also pivotal to our success in the Dutch manager’s first year in charge.
