Manchester United have identified Inter Milan star Andre Onana as the replacement for David de Gea in between the sticks, according to Gazzetta dello Sport via Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils are ‘open’ to acquiring the services of the Cameroonian as the successor to the former Atletico Madrid star. In the upcoming transfer window, the Old Trafford side are eyeing a move for the Serie A giants’ goalkeeper.

At the moment, De Gea is the number one at United. The Spaniard has been the Red Devils’ first choice for over a decade now, having signed for the club in the summer of 2011.

The 32-year-old has had some mixed seasons over the last few years. However, since the previous campaign, the shot-stopper has been in fine form for the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag has stuck with De Gea as his first choice. However, the veteran goalkeeper has left a lot to be desired in terms of his distribution.

While the Spaniard’s shot-stopping is not up for debate, his apparent lack of quality on the ball is seemingly an issue, with the Dutch manager preferring to play out from the back. Also, the 32-year-old’s current contract with the Old Trafford side is set to expire at the end of the season (transfermarkt).

Onana made his way to Inter on a free transfer last summer. Since then, the 27-year-old has carved a place for himself as a regular in the Nerazzurri’s starting lineup.

The Cameroonian developed at Ajax under Ten Hag. He enjoyed several successful years with the Dutch manager in Amsterdam. As a result, the shot-stopper is familiar with the gaffer’s style of play.

However, Onana has just moved to Italy and it remains to be seen whether the Serie A giants will want to part ways with him. As for United, the 27-year-old looks like a decent fit considering his past with Ten Hag.
