Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez issues positive injury update
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has issued a positive injury update after undergoing surgery on Monday on his fractured metatarsal.
The Argentina international picked up a knock in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals. In the 86th minute of the fixture, the centre-back had to be withdrawn.
Martinez is now set to miss the rest of the season. Taking to his social media (h/t Metro), the 25-year-old will now concentrate on getting back to his full fitness as soon as possible.
“Everything went really well, thanks to God! Many thanks for all of your messages. Now focusing on the recovery.”
The Argentine signed for United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax. He reunited with Erik ten Hag in Manchester and has become a pivotal player for the Dutch manager in the current campaign.
Martinez’s career with the Red Devils went off to a shaky start. We lost the first two games of the season to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
However, since then, the South American defender has been paired up with Raphael Varane for the majority of the matches. The Argentine and French nationals have formed a brilliant partnership at the Old Trafford side.
The centre-back hardly put a foot wrong for United in the current campaign. His aggression and tenacity have made the former Ajax star an instant fan favourite.
At the Old Trafford side, Martinez has made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal. While the Argentine’s absence will be missed, thankfully, we have enough cover at the back. Even Varane is on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the same game against Sevilla.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were paired up and were impressive in the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in our previous match. Luke Shaw has also played centrally this season. Hopefully, they will not let us rue the 25-year-old’s absence in the coming months.
