Manchester United star Anthony Elanga was an option for Barcelona on deadline day
Barcelona were eyeing a move for Manchester United star Anthony Elanga on the final day of the January transfer window, according to ESPN Deportes.
Alongside the 20-year-old, the Blaugrana were also looking at acquiring the services of Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat. They were in the market for the Sweden international to bolster their squad.
Apart from the La Liga giants, several other clubs were also interested in Elanga. In the Premier League, Everton asked about the youngster’s availability, while Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven were also interested.
Barcelona had an abundance of talent up front after signing Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha in the summer of 2022. However, Memphis Depay was sold to Atletico Madrid last month. Ousmane Dembele is also out for a few weeks due to an injury.
Although, Xavi still has other options like Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres at his disposal. The Catalan outfit will face us in the Europa League in February.
Elanga has found game time hard to come by in the current campaign. The Swedish national was an influential part of the starting lineup last season under Ralf Rangnick.
However, the 20-year-old has been a bit-part player for Erik ten Hag. In the current campaign, the youngster has made 20 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists.
United have several other stars who have been in fine form up front this season. Marcus Rashford has shouldered the burden of our attack, while Alejandro Garnacho has made an impact whenever he has been called upon.

While competition is fierce at the Old Trafford side, Elanga’s fortunes would seemingly have been no different at Barcelona, considering the depth they have in their attack. Therefore, a move to Spain would not have made sense for the 20-year-old.
