Wout Weghorst understands he will be “judged” by goals at Manchester United
Manchester United star and Holland international Wout Weghorst understands he will be “judged” by the number of goals he will score for the Red Devils.
The 30-year-old was signed by the Old Trafford side in the ongoing transfer window from Burnley. He is at the club on loan until the end of the season.
Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Manchester Evening News), Weghorst knows that he will have to find the back of the net on a consistent basis to make a mark in Manchester. However, the striker has backed himself.
“In the end, it’s very simple. As a striker, you are judged by goals. I have to force it to make minutes. In my career, I have always done one thing: score goals.”
United’s forward line was weakened after Cristiano Ronaldo’s untimely exit in November 2022. The 37-year-old’s departure left Erik ten Hag with only one natural option for the number nine position—Anthony Martial.
Unfortunately, the 27-year-old has not been available on a consistent basis in the current campaign due to fitness issues. As a result, the gaffer has had to play people out of position up front.
Marcus Rashford has been deployed as a striker on various occasions this season. Thankfully, the 25-year-old has found his feet under Ten Hag. The England international has shouldered the burden of our attack.
However, we still evidently needed to reinforce the front line and Weghorst has been brought in as a short-term option. The 30-year-old was decent at Besiktas for half of the 2022/23 campaign.
The Holland international built up a pedigree of being a prolific goalscorer during his time in Germany with Wolfsburg. However, the striker did not have a fruitful spell with Burnley in the Premier League.
