Harry Maguire vows to keep fighting for his place at Manchester United after Charlton Athletic win
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has vowed to keep fighting for his place in the Red Devils’ starting lineup after the victory over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup.
We took on the League One outfit in the quarter-finals of the domestic cup competition on Tuesday (10 January) at Old Trafford. In the end, Erik ten Hag’s team were the better side, winning 3-0.
Speaking after the match to ESPN (h/t Manchester Evening News), Maguire, who played the whole game, was disappointed about not being able to play a lot in the previous fixture. However, the 29-year-old is determined to get back into the gaffer’s plans.
“It felt good, I played last week as well against Bournemouth. I was unfortunate in terms of when I come back from the World Cup, I had a bad illness, to be honest, and it knocked me back for one or two weeks.
“I feel good now. We have a lot of good centre halves at this club, there’s a lot of competition for places and I’ll keep fighting.”
The game against Charlton was a comfortable one for us. Our captain started alongside Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine has not played much for us since his 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Antony opened the scoring for the Red Devils in the 21st minute with a brilliant strike. After that, the Old Trafford side or the League One outfit did not have many chances.
Marcus Rashford came on at the hour mark. The 25-year-old sealed the victory for us with two quick goals towards the end of the game.
Maguire has found himself on the bench most often in the current campaign. After Ten Hag handed the English national a start in the opening two games of the season, which United lost, Raphael Varane and Martinez have been the gaffer’s preferred choice in the backline.
The French and Argentine duo have been solid in defence for the Red Devils. As a result, our captain has had to watch from the sidelines on most occasions.

Maguire’s performances at the 2022 World Cup were encouraging. However, Ten Hag still seems to not trust the 29-year-old, playing Luke Shaw as a centre-back in recent fixtures. While the 29-year-old will hope to start against Manchester City in our next match, it remains to be seen whether the gaffer will give him the opportunity.
