Jorge Mendes ‘working behind the scenes’ to bring FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa to Manchester United
The agent of FC Porto star Diogo Costa, Jorge Mendes, is ‘working behind the scenes’ to bring his client to Manchester United, according to CM Journal (h/t The Sun).
Erik ten Hag is eyeing the 23-year-old to be the new number one at the Old Trafford side. The Portugal international is considered one of the best prospects in world football at the moment.
However, the shot-stopper is tied down with the Dragoes until the summer of 2027 (transfermarkt). His current contract includes a £66 million release clause.
Several clubs are monitoring Costa. Premier League rivals Chelsea are amongst the teams interested in him. However, the Blues already have Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga on their books at the moment.
David de Gea is the first choice in between the sticks at United for now. The Spaniard has been in fine form for the Red Devils since last season. After a shaky start under the new gaffer, the 32-year-old has bounced back admirably.
However, the former Atletico Madrid star leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet. But Ten Hag seems keen on playing the ball out from the back and implementing that style at the Old Trafford side.
Costa broke into Porto’s senior side in the previous campaign. Since then, the 23-year-old has cemented his place in Sergio Conceicao’s team.
The Portugal international has caught a lot of people’s attention, especially with his displays in the Champions League this season. But the shot-stopper struggled for Fernando Santos’ team at the 2022 World Cup.

Even though Costa faltered in Qatar, he has consistently shown his qualities at the club level. The goalkeeper’s age and talent make him a compelling buy for any side. Hopefully, United are able to capture the 23-year-old’s signature in the coming future.
