Erik ten Hag wants to add a quality striker to the Manchester United squad in the coming months
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants to bring a striker to the club in the coming months to bolster the front line. However, the Dutch manager is looking to add quality up front.
Cristiano Ronaldo left the Red Devils midway through the season. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s untimely exit has left us with a player short in the attack.
Speaking via the UtdDistrict (h/t Fabrizio Romano on Twitter), Ten Hag admitted that the Old Trafford side needed a number nine after parting ways with one. But the former Ajax head coach is looking for someone who can make an immediate impact in Manchester.
“We have lost a striker so we need to get a striker in, but has to be the right one who brings quality into the team, not just adding to squad. The criteria is high here at Manchester United.”
United were interested in Cody Gakpo. However, Liverpool have beaten the Red Devils to the Holland international’s signing. But the 23-year-old was not an out-and-out striker anyways.
Currently, Marcus Rashford is the club’s leading goalscorer. The 25-year-old has found the back of the net nine times in 20 appearances in all competitions. He recently scored a goal after a solo run against Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
The England international has had to play up top on several occasions in the current campaign. Ten Hag did not seem to fancy Ronaldo. The 37-year-old did not start many games for the Red Devils this season.
On the other hand, Anthony Martial has had an injury-stricken campaign. The France international has been on the sidelines for most of the Dutch manager’s reign at the Old Trafford side.
Other options at Ten Hag’s disposal at the moment include Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Granacho and Anthony Elanga. The Brazil international and the Argentine youngster have been decent for us this season.

However, with Martial the only natural striker in the squad, for now, the number nine position is evidently short-staffed. Hopefully, United can bring in a talented forward in the next two transfer windows to help take us to the next level.
