Tottenham Hotspur join Manchester United in the race for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester United have been joined by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo, according to ESPN (h/t Express).
The North London side’s manager Antonio Conte has identified the 23-year-old as one of the three players he wants to bolster Spurs’ squad. However, the Eredivisie outfit want around £50 million for him.
However, the Red Devils, along with English top-flight table-toppers Arsenal, are also interested in the Holland international. The Gunners have recently lost Gabriel Jesus after he picked up an injury at the 2022 World Cup.
Tottenham’s scouts have visited PSV to monitor the forward. However, the North London side already boast an impressive front line with the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.
Gakpo has been in fine form for the Eredivisie outfit in the current campaign. In 24 appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team, he has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists.
The 23-year-old also shone in Qatar for the Netherlands. He scored in every group stage fixture for the Oranje as they made it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
With Cristiano Ronaldo’s untimely exit from United, the Red Devils have a vacant space in the attack. Thus, the Holland international seemingly does not have as much competition at the Old Trafford side as he would have at Spurs.
Anthony Martial is the only natural striker at Erik ten Hag’s disposal. Unfortunately, the France international has struggled with injuries this season. As a result, Marcus Rashford has been deployed in the number nine position on a lot of occasions.
