Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to hold talks with Aston Villa amidst interest from Manchester United
Emiliano Martinez, one of the 2022 World Cup heroes of Argentina, is set to hold talks with Aston Villa about his future amidst interest from Manchester United, according to 90min (h/t Express).
The 30-year-old has emerged as a target for the Red Devils ahead of the January transfer window. David de Gea is the current number one at the Old Trafford side. However, the club are searching for a new first-choice goalkeeper to replace the 32-year-old.
The former Arsenal star is tied down at Villa Park until 2027. However, considering the interest in him, the Villans are scheduled to discuss the shot-stopper’s future at the Birmingham-based club.
United are not the only team in pursuit of Martinez’s signature. His performances in Qatar have turned many heads. Premier League rivals Chelsea are also considering the 30-year-old, while Serie A giants Juventus are looking for a swap deal with USMNT star Weston McKennie involved.
However, Unai Emery is keen on keeping a hold of the Argentine. The Spanish manager is going to be personally involved in the conversations with the shot-stopper.
Martinez came in clutch a number of times for La Albiceleste throughout the World Cup. Against the Netherlands, the goalkeeper was the hero in the shootouts, saving two penalties.
In the final against France, the 30-year-old made a brilliant save in the dying
minutes of the game as he was one on one with Randal Kolo Muani. He once again made a save in the penalty shootout as the South Americans lifted the converted trophy.Currently, De Gea is doing a great job in between the sticks for United. The 32-year-old faltered in the first two games of the campaign. However, since then, he has been brilliant for the Red Devils.
The Spaniard’s world-class shot-stopping abilities have been on display in the current campaign, just like last season. However, it has been the former Atletico Madrid star’s quality with the ball at his feet that has left a lot to be desired.

Thus, if United are to replace De Gea, it would be wise to opt for an up-and-coming goalkeeper. While Martinez has been impressive in his own right, the Argentine’s age does not make him a compelling buy.
