Manchester United expect defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka to leave the club in the upcoming transfer window, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The right-back, who signed for the Red Devils from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019, is not in Erik ten Hag’s plans. He has fallen out of favour in the eyes of the Dutch manager.
Thus, the 25-year-old’s departure from the Old Trafford side seems imminent in January. As a result, the Manchester-based club are looking to bolster the right-back spot.
United are considering several options for the right-hand side of the defence. However, Diogo Dalot is seen as the first choice by the management and any addition would have to compete with the Portugal international for a starting berth or serve as a backup.
Initially, Wan-Bissaka enjoyed an unfettered place in the team. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the 25-year-old was the first name on the team sheet.
However, with the Norwegian gaffer’s departure last year, the England U21 international saw his influence at the club decline. Ralf Rangnick gave Dalot a run in the team. The 23-year-old had rarely gotten a chance under Ole. But the former interim head coach preferred the Portuguese.
Soon, the former FC Porto star pipped Wan-Bissaka in the pecking order. The former Crystal Palace star has continued to find himself out of the side under Ten Hag.
In the current campaign, the 25-year-old has hardly gotten on the pitch for United. The England U21 international has made just one appearance for the Red Devils this season, coming on in the final four minutes against Liverpool in the Premier League.
On the other hand, Dalot has started in a majority of the fixtures for the Old Trafford side. The only game the Portuguese missed was the last game before the World Cup game against Fulham. He was suspended for the fixture and Tyrell Malacia was deployed in the right-back spot.
Thus, it will evidently come as no surprise if Wan-Bissaka leaves in the coming months. However, United need to then make sure that Dalot does not end up being the only natural option at Ten Hag’s disposal for the rest of the season.
