Chelsea plan to swoop in if Manchester United sack Cristiano Ronaldo after Piers Morgan interview

Premier League rivals Chelsea are interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo if the Portuguese star is sacked by Manchester United, according to the Mirror (h/t Express).

In an interview with Piers Morgan, which was not sanctioned by the club, the 37-year-old made some controversial statements. He took aim at the Red Devils and criticised the Old Trafford side.

As a result, United are considering dismissing Ronaldo. The club are taking legal advice on how they should proceed. And the Blues are waiting in the wings to see how the situation unfolds.

The Portugal international wanted to leave the Red Devils in the recent transfer window. His agent Jorge Mendes tried to manoeuvre an exit but failed. The Stamford Bridge side were one of the teams being linked with him.

However, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was not keen on bringing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to West London at that time. However, the German has departed the Blues. And Todd Boehly was the one who was interested in buying the 37-year-old in the summer of 2022.

Ronaldo ended up staying in Manchester after the recent transfer window. However, under Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese star has been underwhelming.

The 37-year-old has seen his role in the squad diminish with the arrival of the Dutch manager. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have started ahead of the five-time Ballon d’Or

winner up front.

When Ronaldo has been handed the opportunities, he has cut a frustrating figure. The 37-year-old seems to be missing his shooting boots in the current campaign.

Thus, United should end the Portuguese star’s second spell in Manchester in January or before that, if possible. However, the possibility of strengthening a direct rival like Chelsea is something that also needs to be considered.
