Cristiano Ronaldo reveals he was close to joining Manchester City last summer

Speaking in an interview with Piers Morgan as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo reveals he was close to joining local rivals Manchester City last summer.

The Portuguese superstar was heavily linked with a move to Man City when he was still in Juventus but in a dramatic turn of events, the 37-year-old snubbed City and chose to join his former club Manchester United.

Ever since that saga came out, we have not had confirmation if it was indeed the case that Ronaldo was close to joining Man City but the player himself has come out now and revealed that he was indeed close to joining them.

Ronaldo said that it was a conscious decision to not move to City and it was vastly influenced by legendary manager Alex Ferguson who called him and told him that he should not move to Pep Guardiola’s side.

The former Real Madrid superstar has claimed that ultimately he went with a decision that his heart wanted, which was to return to Old Trafford in what was touted as the homecoming of the once prodigiously talented Man United wonderkid.

Speaking about how the saga happened and what influenced his decisions, here is what Cristiano Ronaldo said

“Well, honestly, it was close… But as you know, as my history is Manchester United. Your heart, you’re feeling the way these two that you did before, make the difference. And of course, as well, Sir Alex Ferguson”

Ronaldo listened to his heart and returned to Man United but it has certainly not gone down well this time around. The 37- year-old has had a torrid second spell in Manchester and he might be re-guessing his decision.

To be fair to Ronaldo, he did have a great first season upon return although it meant nothing as Man United ended trophyless. However, the second season has been awful for the Portuguese forward who has really struggled to get going.

The 37-year-old’s future at the club is far from certain. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Man United and Ronaldo but it does look increasingly likely that the association is not going to continue for too much longer.
