Graeme Souness does not believe the £220m summer spend will help Manchester United challenge for PL

Scotland legend Graeme Souness does not believe the £220 million summer spend will help Manchester United challenge for the Premier League. The former Liverpool player and manager feels the new signing will not make a difference in the title race.

Erik ten Hag was backed in the recent transfer window, with six new faces making their way to the Old Trafford side. Initially, the Dutch manager was given Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez. And the trio have been key this season.

However, after United lost the first two games of the 2022/23 campaign, there seemed to be more urgency to bring further reinforcements. And fans saw Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka make their way to Manchester.

The former Ajax winger has been another vital member of Ten Hag’s starting XI. On the other hand, the Brazilian midfielder who was bought from Real Madrid is slowly being integrated into the team by the Dutch manager.

After the two defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, United have managed to bounce back. We have won every game in the league since then, barring the Manchester derby, which we lost 6-3.

Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News), Souness made his thoughts clear, suggesting United were not going to be in the race for the PL trophy this season. He also took a dig at Ralf Rangnick.

“Do I think the players he has brought in this year are going to make the difference in challenging for the Premier League? I don’t think so.

“We all said whoever comes in has to get more from those players than the previous, the German chap… who I can’t remember his name… most people can’t.”

Ten Hag’s team have managed to turn things around in the current campaign. We have beaten the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal this season. The Gunner currently sit on top of the English top flight.

United have been the only side to take points from Mikel Arteta’s team, beating them 3-1. The game against Manchester City did put a dent in our impressive run. However, the Sky Blues have been a class apart this season.

While fans might not expect the Red Devils to pip the likes of City to the title, there are certain positives so far. Hopefully, United can get top four at the end of the campaign. That will help us build a foundation for the upcoming seasons.
