Barcelona eye free-transfer swoop for Youri Tielemans, who Manchester United were keen on in the summer
Youri Tielemans, who had been linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2022, is being eyed by Barcelona for a free transfer, according to Sport (h/t The Sun). The Belgian is in his final year at Leicester City.
Tielemans’ deal at the King Power Stadium expires in 2023 and the 25-year-old is unlikely to extend his stay. Thus, the Belgian will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside England from 1 January.
Along with the Red Devils, Arsenal were credited with an interest in Tielemans in the recent transfer window. Although Brendan Rodgers’ team were keen on keeping hold of him, they could now decide to cash in on the Belgian in January.
However, now the Blaugrana have entered the race for the midfielder. And the Catalan giants have had an eye on the 35-year-old for months.
SER also claim Xavi Hernandez and his coaching staff are big admirers of Tielemans. Since joining Leicester in the winter window of the 2018/19 campaign, the Belgian has impressed many with his displays.
Brendan Rodgers’ team currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League after a devastating start to the season. And Tielemans has in the past expressed his desire to leave the Foxes and play in the Champions League.
Currently, both United and the Gunners are plying their trade in the Europa League. The Red Devils ended the previous campaign on a downer, finishing sixth in the English top flight.
United signed Christina Eriksen and Casemiro to reinforce the middle of the park in the recent transfer window. The duo have evidently added strength to Erik ten Hag’s squad. However, fans feel we could do better than the other options in the side.

Tielemans is someone who could come for free at the end of the season. And it would be a wise deal to pursue. However, will United be able to swat interest from other top clubs in the 25-year-old? Only time will tell.
