Peter Schmeichel believes Erik ten Hag will need time to succeed at Manchester United
Peter Schmeichel has given his verdict on the upcoming season and believes Manchester United will need time before being challengers for the Premier League title.
The former Red Devil feels the title challenge will be more interesting than last season with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur contending with Manchester City and Liverpool. It will be no easy task given that the latter two have set the bar high over the last few years.
Schmeichel, who spent eight successful seasons at United, said the current team at Old Trafford is in a transitional phase. Speaking to The Times (h/t Metro), the legendary goalkeeper is looking forward to Erik ten Hag’s first season in the Premier League.
“Manchester United? Pre-season has been promising but the reality is that a long process of transition is required.
“The club have backed Erik ten Hag in recruiting players he knows and wanted to work worth, and his first season will be fascinating.”
United have signed three players as of yet this summer transfer window. The Red Devils have signed Tyrell Malacia for Feyenoord, Christian Eriksen on a free transfer and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.
There are other players that Ten Hag seemingly wants, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll get them. However, for now, fans feel our squad still needs more quality to compete with the likes of City and Liverpool.
Our two rivals have built something special under their respective managers. Both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have received the proper backing and their clubs are now reaping the benefits.
Tottenham also look like contenders following the impressive bit of business they have done in the summer transfer window. Antonio Conte has turned Spurs’ fortunes around while Chelsea remains a formidable outfit under Thomas Tuchel.
United have strengthened their defence by bringing in Malacia and Martinez. But our forward line needs reinforcements as well after last season’s disappointing showing.
