Raphael Varane admits that he wants to play with Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane would love to play with Cristiano Ronaldo amid uncertainty over his future. The Portuguese striker’s future has been a big talking point throughout the summer transfer window.
The 37-year-old joined the club just 12 months back, but now he would be looking to leave after making the blockbuster move from Juventus. It has been claimed that the striker was unhappy with the way his team performed last year and was unsure about the club’s ambition heading towards the new campaign.
On an individual level, the legendary striker had a better season in comparison to his teammates as he scored 24 goals in all competitions. However, even after performing at his best level, it was claimed that Ronaldo didn’t suit the system well.
The same point was put forward by Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini when Ronaldo departed from Italy. The defender claimed that the striker disturbed the squad balance as the team started to play according to his strengths.
These words started resurfacing again as the Red Devils started to put on shambolic performances last season. However, the Portuguese striker’s teammate, Varane has stepped up in the defence of the forward by saying that he shouldn’t be blamed for the club’s performances.
Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo played together for eight years at Real Madrid. The French defender knows the forward well and he has witnessed the player performing at his peak at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Manchester Evening News covered Raphael Varane’s words, as he said:
“We know his quality and we know he’s very famous. So we know a lot of people will speak about the performance of the team and his performances but Cristiano is a great competitor. He’s a legend and he always helps the team, so obviously it’s very good to play with him.”
It would be safe to say that Ronaldo was one of the reasons that Manchester United were able to pick up points from important games. His hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur, the winner against Arsenal in the league, the last-minute winner against Villarreal in the Champions League group stage, and many more games, where he picked up the team like a leader.
Although the striker would be unsure of his future at Old Trafford, without a doubt, his name was among the few best players last season. Currently, Erik ten Hag has deployed Anthony Martial upfront and the French striker has done well in the preseason games.
