Transfer News: Fabrizio Romano insists Frenkie de Jong deal is still on

According to the popular Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong is still very much on with the journalist dismissing claims that the deal has collapsed with Barcelona.

Man United wanting to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona is not new news at all with the view of reuniting the talented Dutchman with our new boss Erik ten Hag who worked together during their time at Amsterdam.

De Jong is a world-class midfielder who on his day is capable of running the whole show in midfield single-handedly. On his day, he is extremely unplayable and can influence the results of games with his performances.

The talented Dutchman broke into prominence during the stunning 2018-19 campaign with Ajax where the Eredivisie champions won the league and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. A very young De Jong absolutely dominated a Real Madrid midfield consisting of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemeiro.

Barcelona beat many other leading European clubs to the signature of the talented Dutchman in 2019 and he has since then been an integral part of the Catalan team under different managers despite receiving criticism for his performances.

De Jong’s performances for Barcelona have been far from abysmal but there is always a feeling that he does not perform to his potential. This season, the 25-year-old has played 45 games for the Catalan club scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions.

Romano claims that Manchester United have managed to reach an agreement with Barcelona for de Jong for a fee of €65m with €20m add-ons however the player does not want to leave the Spanish giants.

Man United can only keep pushing, hoping to change Frenkie’s mind and trying to sign him ahead of next season. It seems extremely unlikely right now though and the Red Devils will be wise to look at alternatives.

Frenkie de Jong to Man United is the dream. If it does not happen, however, we can always look at other options.
