Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder wants to keep Manchester United target Antony in Amsterdam

Speaking in an interview with ESPN NL as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, new Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has insisted that he would like to keep Manchester United target Antony in the squad next season.

It is no secret that Manchester United are interested in bringing the talented Brazilian to Old Trafford. Ever since Erik ten Hag assumed responsibility as the manager of the Red Devils, he has been tipped to bring his star man at Ajax with him.

News emerged that Antony’s agents have asked Ajax to listen to proposals for his client this summer but the transfer fee involved is likely to be very high. Regardless, this has not thrown United off course as they keep pushing to sign ten Hag’s wanted man.

Antony joined Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020 and has since then gone on to have two amazing seasons at Amsterdam. Highly regarded as one of the best young wingers in the world, it’s no surprise that he wants to take the next big step this summer.

This season, the Brazilian international has played 32 games for the Eredivisie champions scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions. An all-round player who is good at scoring and creating, it is quite evident why teams want to sign Antony.

With links to Manchester United getting stronger and stronger by the day, the new Ajax manager was questioned about Antony’s future at Amsterdam and his answer sounded more hopeful than optimistic, to say the least.

“We want to keep Antony at Ajax. I want to work with him, and the club knows this”

Ideally, the wing is not a position that Manchester United need to reinforce this summer. The presence of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga and a young exciting crop including Facundo Pellistri, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho coming through means the Red Devils don’t really need a winger.

Despite all this, signing Antony would not be a bad option for the Manchester club. Getting a player who has previously worked under ten Hag means that he would not struggle to adapt to the tactics the manager uses.

If anything, Antony is likely to be more comfortable with the system than the other Man United players will be. Sancho and Rashford are coming off the back of indifferent seasons and a player like Antony could push the duo and bring the best out of them.

One sticking point is the fact that Antony for sure will not come cheap. Ajax are likely to hold out for huge sums of money for their prized asset. It remains to be seen if Man United are willing to break the bank to sign the Brazilian.

If his performances in the Eredivisie are anything to go by, Antony is arguably a special player who is very difficult to say no to. If Man United sign him, he would be a great signing and will mesmerise the Old Trafford faithful for years to come.
