Manchester United legend Gary Neville launches scathing rant at his former club after their 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield
Speaking to Sky Sports after Manchester United’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield (h/t The Sun), United legend Gary Neville launched a scathing review of his former employers and their performance in the Premier League last night.
United stood no chance against a strong Liverpool side, with the Manchester club conceding a goal in the opening five minutes of the game. From then on, they offered no threat to the home team and let in another three goals by the end of the ninety minutes.
Neville, who won 8 Premier League titles with the Red Devils, said that he had been watching the team for 42 years and this is as bad as it gets, calling them a waste of space and hopeless in front of goalkeeper David de Gea.
“I’ve been watching Manchester United for 42 years. This is as bad as it gets in my time watching the club. This United team are a waste of space. They’re hopeless in front of David De Gea.”
Even de Gea could do nothing against the front three of Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane, who all scored in the match. Salah even managed to score a brace in the fixture, carving past the opposition defence with ease. Over 180 minutes of PL football between the two teams this season, LFC put 9 past us without any reply.
“This is just a nothing”
The result left United in sixth place in the league table, while the Merseyside club jumped to the top of the table and leapfrogged Manchester City in the standings. For Ralf Rangnick’s men, their chances of a top-four finish have been dented greatly by the loss.
Neville lambasted his former club, saying that there was an excuse mentality running through the side and that they hide behind the manager. He was appalled at the fact that the side was walking despite being fit, when they should be running throughout and giving it their all on the pitch.
”This is just a nothing. Hide behind the new manager, blame the old. (There’s an) excuse mentality running through the club. Manchester United are fit, but they’re walking – at best an amble, a jaunt. Look at the space between the front and the back, it’s unbelievable. Then they get in shape and walk.”
The former captain’s comments may be harsh, but they do ring true. Having played in an era where United dominated Liverpool and were champions of the land, it will be hard for Neville to drink in the fact that there has now been a role reversal.
The Red Devils are no longer the team they used to once be, and are no longer feared by the opposition. Liverpool’s performances showed exactly how large the gulf was between the two sides, and a major rebuild is needed at Old Trafford to pick up the pieces and try to get back to where they used to be.

There seems to be no one to rely on in the current United squad who we can turn to for inspiration. As Neville suggested, de Gea has kept us in games all season long, while some others have piggybacked on his good form to reach this stage of the campaign.
With a new manager expected to be announced in the summer, the expectation is that a new era of success and trophies will be ushered in ahead of next season to get the Manchester side back to where they belonged. Perhaps Neville, like many fans, will be optimistic about the near future- because honestly, it probably cannot get any worse than it is now.
