Manchester United approach Thomas Tuchel to become their next manager but German to stick with Chelsea despite turmoil

According to Bild (h/t The Sun), Manchester United have approached incumbent Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel to become their next permanent manager as they continue their hunt to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian was sacked late last year by the club after leading the team to a string of poor results that saw them slip down the Premier League table and in danger of missing out on a top-four finish by the end of the season.

He was succeeded by Ralf Rangnick, but the German has only been appointed until the summer on an interim basis, with the former RB Leipzig manager expected to make way in the dugout at Old Trafford for a new permanent boss next term.

The incumbent boss sees his side sit in seventh place in the league table, three points away from achieving his aim of leading the team to a fourth-place finish by the end of the campaign to ensure Champions League qualification for next season.

Tuchel committed to Blues

With the Manchester side looking at options to succeed Rangnick in the summer, the club made contact with Tuchel to enquire about his availability. However, the 48-year-old has informed them that he wants to stay with his current side as long as he can continue to work in the same vein.

This comes despite the west London club’s future remaining uncertain as they are currently not able to sign players due to the government sanctions placed on the club. There are talks regarding a potential takeover to replace Roman Abramovich as the club owner, and it is said their transfer embargo is expected to change once a takeover has been completed.

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain’s loyalty must be appreciated, despite his current side going through turmoil. The manager has stood by them through this tough time, which speaks volumes about his character and resolve to dig deep and come out of it successfully.

Despite only moving to Stamford Bridge last year, the German has led the team to a Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup during his short tenure as their boss, which has made him a fan favourite amongst the supporters.

His latest desire to stay with Chelsea despite a transfer embargo and potential new owners is sure to only improve his image with the Blues faithful and the club executives, although it will come as a blow to United, who were looking to poach him amidst the uncertainty in west London.

The Red Devils will need to look at options elsewhere to replace Solskjaer, with Tuchel seemingly out of the running for the time being. They will need to find a coach who can compete with the likes of Tuchel, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, and Antonio Conte to lead the Manchester side to trophies from next season onwards.

It is no secret that Erik ten Hag is apparently leading the race to be our new boss. Perhaps that means the club itself is looking past Tuchel and focussing on the Dutchman.
