Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani set to leave the club in the summer

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is set to leave the club in the summer as a free agent.

The Uruguayan moved to United on a free transfer in 2020, after he previously spent time at Paris Saint-Germain. For a player of his calibre, it was a steal for the club to snap him up without paying a penny to the French giants.

Romano has now said that the player’s time is going to be up when his current deal with the side expires at the end of the season, as Cavani is looking for a new experience in his playing career.

The 35-year-old was last recently seen turning up for United in the 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, coming on as a second-half substitute in what was his first taste of action after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Plans have not changed

Romano said that there have not been any changes to Cavani’s plan to leave Manchester in June when his contract expires, and that this decision would be confirmed soon. So far, neither club nor player has spoken about the impending expiry of his deal.

The Italian journalist also said that the striker has picked a move to La Liga as his priority at the end of the season, despite South American clubs approaching him for a move. River Plate, who are one of the sides linked to the forward, are not said to be in the race to sign him.

Although a crowd favourite at Old Trafford, Cavani’s injury issues have caused some frustration over the last year as the player hardly seems to be fit for games. His return to action against Spurs last weekend was his first appearance since the Burnley game last month.

2022 has only seen the Uruguay international appear twice for his team, and with age also not on his side, it may perhaps be time for United to cut ties with their striker and not renew his contract. We need to focus on the long-term future of the club as well and resting our hopes on the shoulders of veterans can only work for so long.

Cavani too seems to have this intention of pursuing football elsewhere, with Spain a reported target. The ex-PSG star has never played in La Liga before, and maybe a move away from England could help his injury issues – after all, the Premier League is known to be one of the most physically intense competitions.

If this indeed is Cavani’s swansong campaign with us, fans will remember him as a player who never stopped running and gave his all on the pitch. His energy and enthusiasm will fondly be remembered, and perhaps we can see more of the striker in the coming months after overcoming his recent injury troubles.
