Transfer News: Atletico Madrid and Barcelona could target Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani in summer

According to the Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona could identify Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani as a target for the summer transfer window. He has had a difficult season so far due to the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and the injuries that have plagued him so far.

Cavani has less than six months left on his current deal at Old Trafford and is in line to leave as a free agent after this season. Fabrizio Romano (h/t Fichajes) has claimed that the attacker will not sign an extension with Man United next summer after he had held discussions with the club.

The Uruguayan has a preference to move to La Liga and has been subjected to links with a move to Camp Nou. Barca could target him after this season despite the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Atletico are also in the same boat and could rival them to get his signature.

For the best?

Romano has further confirmed that the 34-year-old had a chance to leave the Red Devils last month. However, he had decided to stay for the remainder of this campaign after talking with Ralf Rangnick. Despite his intentions to leave, he is stated to be fully focused on contributing to the team’s success.

The South American endured a disappointing second term with us and has left a sour taste among the fans at this instant. The sentiment among the supporters has changed regarding him recently as he took some time off the pitch and missed games as a result.

That was the case at the start of this season as well, which eventually led to this situation. Considering the injury struggles, it is for the best that the Uruguay international would not extend his stay with us. The summer signings have caused his prominence to dwindle, further adding to the reason why we do not need him moving forward.

It does not affect us if the Catalans or Diego Simeone’s side would get the Man United star’s signature as he is bound to leave us anyway. However, we must prepare for his eventual exit by finding a suitable replacement who could push us forward in the long term. Only time will give us an answer on whether that will happen or not next summer.
