Transfer News: Manchester United battle Everton for Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez
According to the Belgian publication Voetbal Nieuws (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United will engage in battle with Everton for the services of Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez for a potential transfer. He has enjoyed a great time in Belgium’s 1A Pro League since leaving Borussia Dortmund back in 2021.
Man United have expressed their interest in signing Gomez in the future. However, they will have to deal with the Toffees who are set to register their strong intent to get his signature. They are looking to strengthen the left-hand side of the defence after the departure of Lucas Digne to Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old could be subjected to a bidding war if both Premier League clubs actively pursue him in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils do have two options on the left-back position, so it will be interesting to see if they would target him after this season or not.
Superstar in the making!
The Spaniard has been sensational this season and has been an offensive force for his side. Having played 35 matches this season, he has scored six goals while assisting 13 times across all competitions. He looks to be on the way to fulfilling his potential and could be one for the future.
The Manchester club needs to prepare themselves for the competition they would face from Frank Lampard’s side. After all, they would be looking to get out of their current plight by backing the Chelsea legend through signings. Moreover, signing the La Masia graduate is a kind of necessity for them due to their situation.
However, our circumstances are different due to the presence of Alex Telles and Luke Shaw. Telles has shown signs of recapturing his form from Porto and arguably the attacking style of play used by Ralf Rangnick. The defensive side of his game, though, can still improve.
Shaw has been inconsistent with his performances, which is further put to light in his recent forgettable performance against Southampton. While he had an impressive campaign last season, we could be forced to look elsewhere for reinforcement if both of them do not steady their displays in the future.
Looking at how the young starlet has fared so far, he could be one to lead our line in the future. However, the board would need to prevent uncertainty regarding the managerial role before pushing for targets. After all, their dealings must suit the requirements of the coach who will be managing us next season.

Having three first-team left-backs can also be something of a luxury when we arguably need to strengthen our depth in the centre of the defence and in defensive midfield. But then again, Gomez is still very young and could well be one for the future.
