Transfer Update: Fabrizio Romano reveals there are roadblocks to Anthony Martial leaving Manchester United amidst Sevilla interest

According to transfer expert Fabrizio RomanoAnthony Martial could leave Manchester United in January as Sevilla are interested, but the player’s wages are an issue.

The 26-year-old has endured a tumultuous 18 months at Old Trafford. He ended the 2019/20 season in good form but failed to produce similar performances last term. Injuries have played their part in it, but the Frenchman has failed to maintain consistency.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the summer did not bode well for him either. His agent recently revealed that Martial shall leave Man United in January. The striker could seal a move to Sevilla, as it is one of his preferable destinations

However, all the parties are yet to fully agree to a potential move. The player’s salary is apparently the problem, courtesy of which other clubs could still swoop in and secure his services.

Good riddance?

There is way too much deadweight at Old Trafford at the moment. Martial forms an important part of it since his inconsistencies were partially the reason for the lack of progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian had several other issues, but players like Martial did not help his case. The French international is yet to feature under Ralf Rangnick and it seems unlikely that he can be a regular starter anytime soon. We are in the race to finish in the Top 4 and dropping players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, or Jadon Sancho would be an unwise decision.

Moreover, the only way for us to excel is by moving forward and keeping the 26-year-old at the club would cut into that. Regardless, the sooner he leaves, the better, as it would free up space in the wage bill, and John Murtough and Rangnick could then sign some of the transfer targets.

Martial came as an extremely talented youngster, but things have not worked out well. It is time we accept that it hasn’t worked well for the centre-forward at the Theatre of Dreams, and although he could be a success at another club, Man United are unlikely to regret his sale because there is no place for players that are not good enough to fight for a place in the starting XI.
