Fabrizio Romano says Erik ten Hag to decide on the future of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial in the summer

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United forward Anthony Martial will have his future at Old Trafford decided by incoming new manager Erik ten Hag in the summer.

The Frenchman is currently on loan at Sevilla, having left United in the winter transfer window in January to join the La Liga side until the end of the season. The forward fell down the pecking order at the Theatre of Dreams and joined the Spanish side temporarily to gain more first-team minutes.

Having re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, added with the presence of Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford in the squad, Martial saw himself relegated to the bench this season and was barely getting any opportunities to prove himself in the team.

The English side is also making changes to their coaching staff in the summer, bringing in Ajax Amsterdam boss ten Hag as their new permanent manager next term to improve the team’s fortunes after a disappointing campaign this time around.

“It’s too early”

Romano revealed that the incoming Dutchman will have the final say on whether Martial stays at United or goes, with the striker expected back at the club when his loan spell at Sevilla expires in the summer. The Ajax manager has placed the France international’s future at the club on his priorities list.

Meanwhile, Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui has also commented on his on-loan player’s future in Spain, saying that he cannot discuss the topic now as it is too early to comment.

“We can’t discuss about Anthony Martial’s future now. It’s too early”

A host of changes are expected in Manchester over the summer, with lots of transfer activity regarding players and coaches. ten Hag has finally been announced as the Man Utd boss, but there is still no clarity on which players are likely to be part of his revolution from next season.

Martial has tough competition in attack at Old Trafford, but with the impending departure of Edinson Cavani, he may have a chance to grab that opening and make it his own – subject to the approval of ten Hag. After all, the Dutchman could be keen on bringing in other attacking options if he pleases.

The 26-year-old has failed to replicate the kind of form he showed when he first joined the PL giants, scoring a sensational goal on debut against Liverpool in front of the home crowd and enjoying a stellar debut season, despite being a relative unknown back then.

Over time, his performances for the side have waned and he looked like a player low on form and confidence. His time at Sevilla has not been too productive either, despite being afforded chances by Lopetegui. It remains to be seen if ten Hag is also willing to afford him chances at United next season.
