Transfer News: Manchester United coy on January transfer for Edinson Cavani as Barcelona shown interest

According to ESPN, Manchester United are coy about letting Edinson Cavani leave in the January transfer window as Barcelona have shown an interest in him. He has been a crucial player for Man United but has seen his influence diminish due to the summer signings.

Barca have shortlisted Cavani alongside Manchester City’s Ferran Torres and Inter Milan’s Alexis Sanchez as options to bolster their attack in January. Sergio Aguero retired recently due to the heart problems he faced, whereas the majority of their attacking options are currently on the sidelines due to injury.

Given their financial troubles, the Uruguayan would be the most sensible signing ahead of the winter transfer window for them. They are helped by his contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2022. United, however, are reluctant to sell him in the winter.

Right decision

We would be wise not to allow a transfer in the next month to happen, especially considering how we are going to enter the second half of the campaign amidst a congested fixture list. We could potentially lose the Red Devils ace for free at the end of the season, but that should be the reason why we risk our chances of competing for the top four spots in the Premier League.

The Manchester-based club could still end up in the Champions League places even though we had a poor start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If the Uruguay striker could find his fitness and get over the recurring injuries that plagued him this season, he would offer a lot moving forward. That is especially the case when we consider his contributions off the bench last season.

Ralf Rangnick has used a 4-2-2-2 system at Old Trafford, and the centre-forward could make a great pairing with Cristiano Ronaldo. We had already seen that when Solskjaer used them together, but the sample size to judge their chemistry was small because of the Uruguay star suffering from setbacks.

More Manchester United News

The United superstar is still high up in the pecking order when compared to the likes of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard. It would not make sense to let him leave ahead of them, considering how uncertainty has clouded over the future of the latter duo.

The 34-year-old would slot into Rangnick’s system and the high pressing style used by the manager. The former has earned himself plaudits in the short time he has been at Manchester because of his work effort off the ball coupled with his attacking potency. We would have to see how the situation develops when the winter transfer window arrives, but he is a valuable asset to have in the squad even if it means missing out on some transfer fee in January for a free transfer in the summer.
