Transfer News: Liverpool join Manchester United in race to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips
According to the latest transfer news on Daily Star (h/t The Express), Liverpool are weighing up a move for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips amidst interest from Manchester United.
The 25-year-old has made it through the ranks at Leeds and finally got the opportunity to show his talent in the Premier League last season. His tireless performances in the centre of the pitch earned him a spot in England’s squad for the Euros in June.
The Englishman has not dropped a level this season and has continued with his good displays on and off the ball. However, he is now garnering interest from two of the biggest clubs in the land, Liverpool and Manchester United.
The Red Devils are thought to be keen on bringing the midfielder into their ranks next summer as his age profile and talent could be an invaluable asset in the current squad. Nemanja Matic’s contract will expire in 2023, and Phillips could seamlessly move into the defensive midfield role.
Although the Old Trafford outfit are also ready to make a £60million effort for the player, their arch-rivals could ruin those plans. This is because the Reds are said to be equally keen on securing the midfielder’s services in the summer of 2022.
Moreover, it is also believed that the English international would prefer a move to Anfield due to his current club’s rivalry with Man United. In fact, regardless of Liverpool’s efforts of signing the player, Leeds themselves are trying to tie the central midfielder to a new deal.
