Manchester United might miss out on signing Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips
Speaking in an interview (h/t Mirror), the agent of Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips has revealed that his client is close to signing a new mega-deal amidst Manchester United links.
The Red Devils, who possess the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Fred, Nemanja Matic, and Scott McTominay in their ranks, are said to have earmarked a central defensive midfielder for next summer.
The Old Trafford outfit invested heavily this summer in the frontline and in the defence and could now strengthen in the midfield. It was also thought that the club were on the lookout for cheaper alternatives than Declan Rice.
Kalvin Phillips, who partnered Rice at the Euros for the Three Lions, was apparently being eyed by the Manchester-based club for a potential move. The 25-year-old has been an integral cog in the Leeds machine for several years now and was a key reason for the Whites to finish in the top half of the table last season.
Thus, while he would only add quality to United’s ranks, a move may be ruled out for the Englishman. The midfielder is edging close to becoming the highest-paid player at the West Yorkshire outfit, as he is set to put pen to paper on a deal worth £100,000-per-week, thereby doubling his current wages.
Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp provided an update on his client’s future in an interview recently, saying (h/t Mirror):
“I’ve had positive discussions with Leeds throughout the summer on a new contract for Kalvin. I can only see a positive outcome. Kalvin’s desire is to stay, and there is a real willingness from all sides to make it happen.”
