Dean Smith believes Manchester United should aim for Premier League glory this season

According to Villa TV (h/t Birmingham Mail), Aston Villa boss Dean Smith believes Manchester United should be going for Premier League glory this season.

The Red Devils have started the season well, winning four of their first five games in the league. This has seen them keep abreast of Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have, however, shown their Achilles heel in cup competitions. United lost their UEFA Champions League opener against Young Boys and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham United.

United now go into this weekend’s clash against Villa keen to get their winning run back on track. Smith believes a club such as the Red Devils should have their eye on the big prize.

“I’ve seen David de Gea’s interview this morning and they’ve got title aspirations. A club like Manchester United should have.”

He went on to name United among four clubs who will be challenging for the title this season. This includes defending champions Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. The task will not be easy but United have recruited well this summer and have the ammo to make the difference.

“It’s a massive club with a massive history, and they’re going to be pushing to challenge the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.”

Despite the complimentary remarks, Smith is coming to Old Trafford keen to upset the applecart. He does not intend to sit back and may take the game to United. The Red Devils only have to look back to Villa’s last game against Chelsea to see how well the Midlands side can play.

“Our job is to go there and go toe-to-toe with them like we did at Chelsea.”

The game will not be easy. But if United are truly title contenders, it should just be another brick in the wall. No Premier League team ever has won more games against another than United have over Villa. Hopefully, that trend will continue for the foreseeable future.
