Manchester United fans set to be barred from making it to the Champions League opener against Young Boys
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United fans look set to be barred from attending their side’s Champions League opener against Young Boys on September 14.
The Europa League finalists get their European journey rolling this season with a trip to Switzerland next week. While the team is set to go ahead, they could have to kick start their campaign sans their fans.
UEFA announced on Monday that travelling supporters will be able to attend European games. However, they left the prerogative to the home city’s stance on COVID-19 regulations. This has now put United fans in a spot of bother.
According to the report, Young Boys are adamant that all fans in attendance should produce a Switzerland or EU Covid Vaccination Certificate to enter the stadium in accordance with local rules. The NHS vaccine pass will not be considered valid.
An indicator of things to come, Young Boys have not issued a ticket allocation to United. The Red Devils would ordinarily have been allocated 2000 seats and are still pushing to see it come through.
Switzerland is currently on the UK Government’s Covid green list and anyone travelling back to the UK does not need to quarantine provided they test negative for the virus.
While the Swiss Giants’ could prevent United fans from travelling to the match, what exactly it means for those residing locally or in the European Union remains to be seen. United confirmed that they are in talks with both UEFA and Young Boys regarding a solution.
Whether a resolution can be reached remains to be seen. Atalanta and Villarreal are the other two teams in Group F alongside United and Young Boys. With or without fans, the Red Devils will be expected to get the job done in Switzerland.
