Manchester United fans react as Red Devils crash out of UEFA Champions League vs Atletico Madrid

In the end, Manchester United failed to turn up for their first home knockout tie in the UEFA Champions League for some time now.

The Red Devils went into the game knowing that a win was needed for them to progress to the last eight of the competition. While they did start off well, there was no way past Jan Oblak.

Atletico were content to sit deep and hit us on the counter. They struck gold late in the first half when Renan Lodi scored past a hapless David de Gea to give the visitors the lead. While Man United did show some urgency soon after, they went into the break a goal down.

Little changed after the break as the Red Devils probed Jan Oblak’s goal but failed to find a way past him. Raphael Varane had the best chance of the second half, forcing an excellent save from the Atletico goalkeeper.

While some will doubtless blame the referee for the result, the truth remains that Man United were just not good enough. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes both looked shorn of ideas and were largely passengers on the field.

It is now another trophyless season for the Red Devils. A huge summer waits and it remains to be seen if they will qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, to begin with.

For now, we look at how fans reacted to the performance on Twitter.
