Roy Keane Club Career

Keane comes from a family that has a history of playing football at junior Cork clubs such as Rockmount. He spent eight years at the youth level. Keane then joined the semi-professional club, Cobh Ramblers.

It was here where he bloomed into a footballer of repute and caught the attention of Nottingham Forest’s Noel McCabe. Keane impressed the legendary Brian Clough, who then took him to the City Ground.

He initially struggled before coming into his own as a top-level player. This attracted the attention of a number of top sides including Manchester United. He eventually moved to Old Trafford in 1993 and has gone on to write his name into the club and English football folklore. The Red Devils paid a then-British record fee and it was money well spent.

Keane missed the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

A dynamic player also capable of playing it rough, he was a solid presence in Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering side. The Irishman went on to make 470 appearances for the club, scoring 51 goals while making 30 assists.

Keane was United’s skipper for eight years from 1997-2005. He famously led United to the treble in 1999 and holds the joint record for the most red cards received in English football with 13.

Keane’s relationship with then assistant manager Carlos Queiroz deteriorated and he also had arguments with Sir Alex. Eventually, he left the club in 2005. The veteran spent a short time at Celtic before hanging up his boots in 2006.

Roy Keane International Career

Keane represented Ireland at various youth levels before making his senior bow in 1991 against Chile. He had a largely confrontational relationship with the national side leading to various controversies.

It reached a climax in 2002 when Keane was sent back home from the Ireland squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He eventually announced his retirement from the international stage following Ireland’s failure to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Keane made 67 appearances for his country, scoring nine goals.

Roy Keane Current Job and Endorsements

A no-nonsense man who is not afraid to talk his mind, Keane has always made for an excellent television presence. He currently works as a football pundit for Sky Sports and is often seen making assertions that he is not going to back down from.

The old-timer has also had previous management stints at Sunderland and Ipswich Town. It would be an exaggeration to call either spell a success. With him doing well on television, it remains to be seen if a return to the managerial hot seat is on his mind.

It is unclear if he endorses any products at this moment in time.

Keane is, however, also recognized for his ability as a footballer. He was inducted into the English football hall of fame in 2004 and also the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.

Despite his falling out at United, the club deemed it fit to give him a testimonial as gratitude for his 12 and a half years of service. It took place at Old Trafford on 9 May 2006 between United and Celtic. It gave Keane a chance to revisit his role as United skipper as he represented both teams in either half.
