Roy Keane believes Manchester United need one new midfielder this summer
Speaking on the Overlap Live Fan Debate (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has given his vote of approval to the club’s transfer business this summer.
The Red Devils have brought in Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho. Four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane is also set to be announced imminently. In Sancho and Varane, United have brought in two major players who can make a difference on the field.
The twin acquisitions address two positions in the United squad that needed serious readdressing. When everyone is fit, United now have a first XI that can go toe to toe against the best sides in Europe. Keane is however hopeful that United will make one more major acquisition before the window shuts.
A notorious man to please, Keane’s vote of assent is a mark of the good work the club has done behind the scenes. Unlike the previous summers, the club has been proactive in the market and got deals for major targets over the line. Despite not having won a major honour for four years, United remain a major draw for the best players.
“I think the couple of signings they have made are obviously fantastic, there’s no doubting the quality they’ve got in.”
Keane remains convinced that the team needs another central midfielder and a better alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back. Given what we have spent already this summer, it is debatable if we will go big on one more addition.
“I’m worried definitely about the middle of the park – we can get to the goalkeeper in a minute and I’m still not convinced with the right-back.”
United could really do with another midfielder who can add something different to the team. While there are options, United will need an upgrade if they are serious about challenging for top honours.
Fred and Scott McTominay are too one-dimensional while Donny van de Beek has failed to impress. To add to it, Nemanja Matic is not getting any younger and Paul Pogba’s contract is running out. Bringing another player into the mix would not be a bad idea at all.

With the window drawing to a close, United have enough time to make one more major move. The likes of Declan Rice, Leon Goretzka and Eduardo Camavinga have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Whether any of them come to pass remains to be seen.
