Gary Neville asks Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United for more starts
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Overlap debate, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has asked Jesse Lingard to leave the club in order to seek more playing time.
The 28-year-old midfielder has had a tough time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when it comes to getting regular starts. And he was loaned out to West Ham United for the second half of last season as the manager failed to see him in his short-term plans.
But Lingard had a highly impressive spell at the London Stadium. He certainly found his form and his exploits saw him make it to England’s preliminary 32-man squad for the Euros.
And Neville, referring to the playmaker’s spell at the Hammers, wants the United academy graduate to leave the club in order to find regular playing time.
No love for Lingard
“Jesse needs to leave for Jesse. He got pride last year playing at West Ham. He’s the man there and he will come back here [Man United] and play 15 games and be a good squad player. But he doesn’t want that again surely after what he experienced last season [at West Ham]. Jesse needs to leave for Jesse Lingard.”
Roy Keane, to barely anyone’s surprise, put across his views on Lingard in a blunt manner as compared to Neville. He mentioned that the Englishman, along with Fred and Scott McTominay, are not good enough to make the club challenge for the title right now.
“They have to shift them on [fringe players], they’re not the answer. If you ask me if I think Jesse Lingard is going to get United back challenging for titles, the answer is no. And I’ll say the same for Fred, and maybe [Scott] McTominay.”

It’s perhaps a little harsh from the duo to lay in on Lingard in such a manner and if he does stay at Old Trafford this season, their words can be the driving force he needs to prove that he is worthy of donning the United shirt.
