Manchester United star Luke Shaw opens up on Roberto Carlos praise
According to Lion’s Den (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United star Luke Shaw has opened up on praise dished out by Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos.
The Brazilian left-back is considered to be amongst the finest left-backs in football history. The very fact that he acknowledges Shaw’s performances shows just how far the United star has come.
The 25-year-old went into this summer’s Euros on the back of his best-ever season for United. He has carried over that fine form into the tournament and has been one of the Three Lions’ top players. His performance against Ukraine in the quarter-finals was particularly eye-catching.
Speaking to PA Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Carlos stated that Shaw has it in him to reach the very top. The English international however admits that he is yet to read the Brazilian’s effusive praise.
“To be fair, I didn’t even see any of that [Carlos’ praise], it’s the first time I’ve heard of it.”
The United star admits that he could not believe Carlos took time out to comment on his Instagram post. Having grown up watching the legend weave his magic, it is a special moment to have him appreciate your performances.
“Obviously, it’s so nice to hear that from one of the best left-backs ever and after the game when I had seen he had followed me and commented on my photo, I couldn’t believe it to be honest.”
“It was a weird feeling, but one that I take massive respect from it and it’s really nice to hear words from someone like that.”
England take on Denmark in the semifinal of the Euros later tonight. A win will see them face Italy in the showpiece event of the summer. The Three Lions have failed to win a major international tournament since their triumph in the 1966 World Cup.

Shaw stood out in England’s memorable win over Germany in the last 16 and provided two assists in their 4-0 win over Ukraine in the quarterfinals. Three assists in two games see him trail only behind David Beckham in England’s all-time list of assist getters at the Euros.
