According to Manchester Gazzette (h/t Leicestershire Live), Paul Swinson has revealed that Leicester City hold the edge in the race to land Manchester United winger Daniel James.

The Foxes are keen to reinforce their squad after missing out on the top four for the second time in two seasons earlier this year. The latest name on their wishlist is James, who on his day is a handful to contend with.

The Welsh speedster has been at United for two seasons now after joining from Swansea City in 2019. He has since made 72 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring nine goals and making nine assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

A talented player, James’ best asset is his pace. However, has lacks consistency and never always plays to his strengths. This has seen him struggle to hold down a starting spot at Old Trafford. Capable of playing on either wing, this versatility is another tool that he has failed to exploit to the maximum.

James’ opportunities next season could now come at a premium, thanks to the arrival of Jadon Sancho. The English international looks set to take over as the club’s first-choice right-winger. With Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo also in the picture, James could struggle for minutes.

With Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo also in the picture, James will find game time at a premium. With Marcus Rashford occupying the left flank, James’ versatility will do him little good. At 23, he should be playing regularly to further his development. This could be out of the question at United.

James was close to signing for Leeds before joining United

James has also attracted attention from the likes of Aston Villa, Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion and even Leeds United. At 23, he needs to be playing regularly. If United cannot provide him that, maybe it is better to seek it elsewhere.
