AC Milan eye Alvaro Odriozola as an alternative to Manchester United star Diogo Dalot

According to Milan Live (h/t Sport Witness), Italian giants AC Milan are ready to walk away from their interest in Manchester United star Diogo Dalot.

The full-back spent the 2020/21 season on loan at the San Siro. He made 33 appearances for the Rossoneri, scoring twice and laying on three assists as they qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Both Dalot and Milan are keen on a reunnion this summer. As of yet, United are yet to sanction a move and the player is set to report to Old Trafford for pre-season next month.

United’s move could have something to do with their efforts to bring in Kieran Trippier this summer. The Red Devils are keen on the Atletico Madrid star but could be priced out of a move. Whether this means they will go into the new campaign with Dalot in their plans remains to be seen.

Milan meanwhile is not keen to stick around and will move onto other targets if a move for Dalot doesn’t pan out. According to the report, Real Madrid’s Alvaro Odriozola is identified as an alternative and Milan have already reached out to his representatives.

It has so far proven to be a frustrating summer for the Italians who have lost both Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu on a free to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan respectively.

Dalot will return to United in July.

Whether this is a ploy by the Italians to force their hand regarding Dalot remains to be seen. Even if a deal can be agreed upon, it looks increasingly likely to be one on loan, at least at the beginning.

Dalot’s contract runs until 2023 and he has so far shown little to suggest that he could be an impactful player for the club. With the Red Devils keen to bring in a defender and Jadon Sancho, it remains to be seen if they will pull the plug on a move for Trippier. Whether that is the new lease of life that Dalot needs at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
