Manchester United to loan out Brandon Williams in the summer transfer window

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are set to send young full-back Brandon Williams out on loan this summer.

The youngster enjoyed a breakout season in 2019/20 and looked to be ready to take the next step in his career. Unfortunately, the 2020/21 campaign was a forgettable one and he was largely assigned a fringe role.

The 20-year-old made just five starts for United last season and was denied a mid-season loan following the sale of Timothy Fosu-Mensah to Bayer Leverkusen and loaning Ethan Laird to MK Dons. It would be fair to say that this has led to Williams’ development suffer a setback.

Williams has played most of his career at left-back but can also do a job on the other flank. The left-back position is locked down thanks to Luke Shaw and Alex Telles while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the clear first choice at right-back.

United are also in the market for a new right-back and have Diogo Dalot returning from loan this summer. It is fair to suggest that Williams will have a hard time getting playtime let alone break into the playing XI.

Both Southampton and Norwich are keen on Manchester United starlet and could make a move for him in the summer. United, for their part, are eyeing Canaries star Max Aarons to strengthen the right-back slot. Whether we can tempt Norwich into also taking Williams on loan as a sweetener remains to be seen.

A move away on loan will help him not only gain more minutes but also reignite his development away from the spotlight. Despite his potential, Williams has much to iron out and there is little he can gain from staying on the fringes at United.
