Manchester United set to pull the plug on Kieran Trippier transfer
According to Football Insider, Manchester United could be about to walk away from a deal for Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier.
United’s initial bid worth £10million was rejected last week with Atletico seeking more for their star man. While United were keen to return to the negotiating table, Atletico’s rigid stance regarding the transfer fee has put a damper on their efforts.
The Spaniards have informed United in the last 24 hours that they will not reduce their £35m asking price for the England international. The Red Devils do not believe the price justifies that of a soon to be 31-year-old and could drop out of the pursuit.
The situation is a nightmare come true for Trippier who was keen to return to Manchester. The full-back was worried that he could be priced out of a move and that appears to be coming true.
The 30-year-old played a key role for Atletico last season as they won the La Liga title. He was eventually named in the La Liga team of the year. Trippier was subsequently selected for the England squad for the Euros.
He started the Three Lions’ tournament opener against Croatia at left-back. Whether he will hold onto his position against Scotland on Friday remains to be seen.
According to The Metro, Trippier intends to push through a move to Old Trafford once the Euros are over. Whether he will indeed force Atletico’s hand remains to be seen.
To add to their woes, the new Brexit rules classify Trippier as a non-EU player. Spanish sides are permitted just two such stars and the amendment of rules makes Trippier the third such player. Whether United will take advantage of this situation remains to be seen.
