According to Fichajes (h/t FourFourTwo), Manchester United have been linked with a move for LOSC Lille star Jonathan David.

The 21-year-old caught the eye after he moved to Belgian side Gent in 2018. He regularly found the back of the net, eventually earning himself a move to Lille in 2020.

While David has failed to hit the same numbers, he has so far held his own and has impressed on his day. With 11 goals and four assists in 44 appearances, the Canadian international has enjoyed a decent start to life in Ligue 1. (h/t Transfermarkt)

United are in need of a striker heading in the summer window. This requirement could be intensified if Edinson Cavani too leaves the club at the end of the campaign.

While we have been linked with big names such as Erling Haaland and Harry Kane, neither will come cheap. Given the current financial scenario, it is safe to say that they may even be unaffordable.

David not only represents a cheaper option but is also available. Lille’s financial situation could force their hand in the summer, dismanting a team that is at the moment at the summit of the French top flight.

David to leave Lille this summer?

David still has four years to go on his current deal. What this means when it comes to negotiations remains to be seen.

United could face competition from both Arsenal and Bayern Munich for the Canadian ace. The Gunners are in need of a rebuild and could turn to David if Alexander Lacazette leaves the club in the summer.

Now that he has made his mark in Europe, it remains to be seen if he can make the step up to Old Trafford. The arena is not called the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for nothing.
